4 Speeds of Flight
One form of flight is known as supersonic flight, which is one of the 4 speeds of flight, along with subsonic(slower than the speed of sound. Generally the speed commercial planes travel at), transonic(About or At Mach 1), and hypersonic(greater than mach 5. This is more than five times the speed of sound. It is the speed traveled by rockets and the space shuttle as they go into orbit.)
Mach Numbers
Supersonic flight is faster than the speed of sound which is 1,236 km/h. They are referred to as mach numbers. Mach numbers are the ratios of the plane speed to the speed of sound. Mach 1 is about 1225.04 km/h (Kilometers per hour), and about 760.6 mph (Miles per hour). Mach 2 is almost 2450.09 km/h and almost 1521.1 mph. Mach 3 is approximately 3675.13 km/h and approximately 2281.7 mph. Mach 4 is around 4900.18 km/h and around 3042.2 mph. Mach 5 is roughly 6125.22 km/h and roughly 3802.8 mph. Supersonic flight hasn’t been used in commercial use much because it was believed to be uneconomical, but may return in the near future.
